A Special Visit!!
It was such a pleasure to welcome a wonderful group of GCSE art textile students from Looe Community Academy today!! I happen to be one of the artists they have been studying - and so they decided to pay me a visit to find out more about my work. They brought a lot of enthusiasm with them, as well as lots of questions!!
It was great to see them looking around at the art as well as the studio and I particularly enjoyed their opinions and thoughts on how my style has evolved. They were well prepared for the trip and it was evident from their questions that they had been studying my work in depth. I really enjoyed sharing my creative process with these eager young learners and I’m so looking forward to seeing their creations sometime soon. I’m pretty sure they left inspired as well as a little more confident in their free motion embroidery skills!
This meet has been a long time coming! I had planned to visit the students at their school last year but like many events, Covid 19 prevented this from happening. I actually think this was far more fun for them!
I’m truly delighted that art textiles is becoming increasingly popular as a GCSE subject. For me this is a triumph as when I first began my art journey, textile art was a rare sight in a gallery, often being perceived as craft as opposed to art. It is now strongly recognised and appreciated as an independent art genre which is so encouraging for those young creatives with enthusiasm and talent for tactile art expression. The world is finally recognising that fine art is not restricted to paint and canvas :)
