A Monochrome Day…

Yes. I know this time of year is filled with robins, baubles and sparkle - however, today I went for something a little different! It’s not often I purely illustrate in stitch these days but today that’s exactly what I did! I recently acquired a particularly ornate art nouveau style frame and decided it needed something special inside it! I love vintage and unusual frames and the fun of decided what to create to go inside them! In this case, my gut instinct was to get sketching and so IIn began my mission!

Here’s the dinky beauty sat on my work bench - my nice warm home studio, I hasten to add!! That’s the before pic, here’s the after…

It had to be the beautiful Burgh Island of course! For those of you who aren’t familiar, Burgh Island hotel is an Art Deco style hotel located in Bigbury On Sea in the South Hams. A wonderful spot - one of my favourite spots, in fact. I guess you could say deco met nouveau on this one. This is a sketch in stitch - free hand motion embroidery. I wasn’t entirely sure how it would turn out but it did and I think the entire piece works really well. There is a glimmer of bling, creating a sense of invitation and warmth. Oh I am determined to stay there one day…

All in all, a satisfying and enjoyable days work!! This I believe is the sixth Burgh Island piece I’ve created - though not in this style. It certainly won’t be the last. It will be on view in my studio this coming weekend and available to buy, priced at £195. This petite original measures 9.5 x 9.5 inches. I need to extract it from my hallway first!!
